Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers - Atlantic
February 15, 2006

Charlottetown, PEI – The Atlantic region will soon have a new outstanding young farmer.

Top young farmers from the Atlantic region will gather in Charlottetown on February 17th for the annual recognition ceremony. The event will take place as part of the National Potato Expo being held at The Charlottetown Civic Centre.

Three farm couples from the region are participating this year: Scott Moore and Karen MacDougall-Moore from Pugwash, Nova Scotia; John and Clair Green from Springfield, Prince Edward Island; and Marc and Krista Schurman from Kensington, Prince Edward Island. The nominees will go through an interview process on Friday morning conducted by a panel of judges. The winners will be chosen and announced later that evening at a banquet being held at The Delta Prince Edward Hotel.

The Outstanding Young Farmers (OYF) Program recognizes those who demonstrate excellence in their field. Having done so for over 25 years, the program boasts more than 150 farm couple alumni. Regional recipients from across the country attend a national event to be recognized for their contribution and achievement to agriculture. The Atlantic Region has won the National Award the last three years and has had 13 national winners since 1980. The 2005 national recipients were Steve Reeves and Jessica Francis from Freetown, PEI.

Regional sponsors include: the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, PEI Food Trust, AgraPoint, Master Promotions, Farm Credit Canada, Shur-Gain, ADL, Pioneer Hi-Bred Ltd and Scotsburn Dairy Group. The National program is sponsored by John Deere, CIBC, Bayer CropScience and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
